We might be tempted to say that the United States Supreme Court took our nation backward today, but what they did was solidify a future where women and birthing people have fewer rights by removing protections for abortion access nationwide. Resisting the wisdom of the United Nations, which considers abortion access to be a human right, SCOTUS’s decision destabilizes our democracy. The ruling on Dobbs. V. Jackson Women’s Health not only subjects birthing people to forced pregnancy, birth, and parenting, it creates a ripple effect. When reproductive rights are threatened, all of our rights are threatened. For instance, it immediately endangers the future of contraceptive access, IVF, protections against forced sterilization, and marriage equality.
Though New Mexico is a state where abortion remains legal, we must not take this moment for granted. We cannot let up, and we won’t. Through our grantmaking, NewMexicoWomen.Org continues to support groups who are working daily to improve economic security, protect and expand reproductive access, guard civil rights, and provide critical services to improve family wellbeing for New Mexicans. The time to mobilize resources for these efforts has never been more important.
