Fall is blowing in, and with it the upcoming mid-term elections.

We are proud to live in a state that has one of the highest rates of women and women of color represented in public office. This is a sign of a healthy democracy.

In a moment when political extremists are determined to strip away reproductive rights, attack the bodily sovereignty of transgender folks, and restrict access to voting in many states, working for gender justice is essential to maintaining our democracy. Here in New Mexico, community partners and elected officials have been working for decades to ensure that our reproductive healthcare ecosystem is sound and that our state remains a safe haven for those seeking abortion services. Simultaneously, access to services remains challenging for rural, low income, and communities of color.

We know that reproductive rights issues mobilize voters. High rates of voter turnout in Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Michigan recently ensured that abortion was legally protected in these states. New Mexicans have an opportunity to do the same. Beyond abortion care, our rights, access to services, and equitable policies are not guaranteed. Alongside community organizing and long term work for gender justice, showing up at the ballot box is critical. Particularly when we know that so many communities and individuals are actively denied and being excluded from the electoral process. Let’s get out the vote for gender justice, folks!

Co-Creating a Culture of Healing
Graphic Art by Gina Montoya
In keeping with our Gender Justice and Healing strategy, healing and care go beyond what we can do individually—our individual wellness is bound to the wellness of the collective. In that same vein, strong relationships and community connections help us heal and make justice work more resilient. With this in mind, this summer we brought together our Healing Award partners at, “Creating a Culture of Healing,” an online gathering where we explored what it means to build cultures of healing within social justice work. One key takeaway was how radical and necessary it is to include healing and collective care in organizational budgets, because budgets speak volumes about our values. Knowing this, NMW.O is committed to supporting work happening at this intersection of healing and justice in New Mexico through our Healing Award program and by building relationships through these kinds of gatherings.
NM Healthy Masculinities Toolkit
Train-the-Trainer Recording is Live!
Earlier this month, the NM Healthy Masculinities Collaborative offered a virtual Train-the-Trainer session on the NM Healthy Masculinities Toolkit. This training provided an overview of the toolkit, with the focus of the session involving a live demonstration of the “Gendered Me” activity for participants who intend to bring the toolkit to their communities. This training is recorded and available to community members seeking a better understanding of the toolkit and ways to implement it, locally. Click here to view the training! And, stay tuned for more opportunities for community members and organizations to be involved with our healthy masculinities work later this fall.
