NewMexicoWomen.Org was thrilled to have the opportunity to meet with participants in the US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. We surveyed the issues facing women and girls in New Mexico and examined the impact of the non-profit sector on women’s issues with activists from Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestinian Territories, Romania, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
It was an incredible opportunity to see the similarities and differences in our work and the work going on across the world. We discussed the challenges of programmatic autonomy within strict funding guidelines, gender-based violence, and harmful biases within societies, as well as the effects of war and national disasters on networks of non-profit organizations.
We were especially excited to see Soraya Matthews, a representative from South Africa’s WHEAT Trust and fellow participant in Women Funding Network’s Raising Leaders, Raising Millions program who we had the pleasure of meeting last May.
