10 Ways You Can Take a Stand for New Mexico’s Women and Girls this International Women’s Day

NewMexicoWomen.Org is celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD)! IWD first emerged from the activities of labor rights movements at the turn of the twentieth century. This year the United Nations theme is Step it Up for Gender Equity. Here are 10 ways you can Step it Up for Gender Equity by Taking a Stand for women and girls in New Mexico!

Educate yourself on the quality of life for women and girls in our state — Read NewMexicoWomen.Org’s Indicators Report: A Statistical Resource Guide to Women and Girls in New Mexico.

Write a letter to an elected official about the gender pay gap. A woman working full-time is paid 79 cents for every dollar a man is paid. It’s even less for women of color: 66 and 59 cents for Latina and Native American women, respectively.

Defend a woman’s right to reproductive health access in New Mexico. Check out the reproductive justice work being done statewide here

Get involved in an action, meeting or demonstration. Go to the Roundhouse, attend legislative events, participate in actions and online petitions.

Learn about groups working to improve the lives of women and girls in New Mexico. NewMexicoWomen.Org has powerful partners working all over the state — Learn about their work here

Adopt an intersectional analysis, an approach that includes race, class, ability and environment, recognizing that there are various lived experiences in addition to gender. See our op-ed below and in the Green Fire Times for more information about this.

Acknowledge the powerful women in your life who have supported you. Here’s one example of how you can do that.

Speak your truth by disrupting sexist narratives or dynamics in your environment.

Share your story with your peers and community. One of our partners is story banking the experiences of women in New Mexico — Reach out to them here
