In honor of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, NewMexicoWomen.Org is launching our New Mexico Sheroes campaign, to celebrate women who have made herstory in our state! The New Mexico Sheroes campaign will feature unsung heroines and self-identified women leaders in our state who represent and embody power, creativity, and resilience.
Throughout this campaign we’d also like to learn about the Sheroes who inspire you. What family or community members do you know, or have heard stories about, who have moved you?
To participate, post a photo of the NM women you want to honor with a message about what they’ve meant to you and your community on your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter page and tag NewMexicoWomen.Org!
Our first post celebrates Dolores Huerta, who was born in Dawson, NM in 1930, and has been teaching us the importance of fighting discrimination and community organizing in order to improve the social and economic conditions for workers since the 1950s. This mujer poderosa co-founded the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez, playing an instrumental role in teaching Americans to honor the people who harvest our food, and nourish our bodies.
As NM State Rep. Angelica Rubio said recently, “some of you have the George Washingtons and Abraham Lincolns, we have Dolores Huerta.”
