Happy LGBTQ Pride Month, friends! There have been powerful celebrations around the state throughout the month. NMW.O is proud to support and stand in solidaritity with partners working on gender justice and LGBTQ equity across New Mexico. Join us on Saturday, June 30th in Santa Fe as we march with our “Dismantle Patriarchy” banner.

In the weeks leading up to Pride Month, Roxsana Hernandez, a trans woman and asylum seeker from Honduras died in Albuquerque while in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Roxsana was being detained at the Cibola County Correction Center, New Mexico’s newest immigrant detention center, along with 60 other trans women. Advocacy organizations working with Roxsana believe ICE did not respond with the appropriate medical care for Roxsana, exacerbating health conditions which ultimately led to her death.

As Audre Lorde has so accurately stated, “There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we don’t live single-issue lives.” And, as Staceyann Chin has punctuated, “All oppression is connected.” This Pride, we are reflecting on how to stand in solidarity across issues, because we know that our lives and those of our loved ones, are complex and multiple.
