NewMexicoWomen.Org presented a plenary session on gender-based microaggressions at the Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) Summer Institute, on June 18th in Santa Fe. In this #MeToo climate, many science communities are turning their attention to Title IX and Title VII issues. A recent study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, revealed that 50% of women in STEM fields have experienced some form of harassment. While most science societies offer perfunctory trainings, an act of symbolic compliance, the conference planners from GEM are aware that these activities rarely prevent sexual harassment. They reached out to NMW.O seeking a more in-depth presentation of microaggressions and strategies for addressing them in the workplace. NMW.O celebrates GEM and their efforts to change the culture of STEM fields by educating their community about microaggressions and harassment in a meaningful way.
