The Pueblo of San Felipe Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) held their Annual World Breastfeeding Day Event in August at the San Felipe Pueblo Black Mesa Casino Showroom. This year’s theme was, “Empowering Parents, Enable Breastfeeding”, and highlighted the importance of women who are breastfeeding. Over 100 people attended the event, which included a nutritious dinner and comedy/motivational show featuring comedy duo, James and Ernie. There was a message of traditional empowerment, and all breastfeeding mothers in attendance were recognized for their outstanding willpower to start their baby’s life on a healthy note.

The Pueblo of San Felipe WIC Nutrition Program has created an opening to bring to light breastfeeding inequalities. They strive to ensure that all mothers who are a part of the program have the support they need to reach their breastfeeding goals. They create supportive environments in which breastfeeding is the cultural norm. The breastfeeding culture includes all forms of feeding human/mother’s milk from latching, to pumping, to bottle feeding.

NewMexicoWomen.Org was honored to support this important cause! If you would like to support the work of the Pueblo of San Felipe WIC Nutrition Program and their breastfeeding counseling program, please contact Kelly Lewis, Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, at klewis@sfpueblo.com.
